Kuwait 0 Australia 4: Socceroos deliver win for new coach Arnold

Australia brushed aside Kuwait 4-0 in a friendly on Monday to hand coach Graham Arnold victory in his first game since taking charge.

Former Sydney FC coach Arnold replaced Bert van Marwijk after the 2018 World Cup and kick-started his reign with a comfortable win.

Played in front of a sparse crowd at Al Kuwait Sports Club Stadium, the visitors went ahead in the 12th minute when Khaled Hajiah put through his own net.

Robbie Kruse s dangerous cross from the left was met by the defender, who headed past his own goalkeeper from 10 yards out.

Apostolos Giannou has his first international goal for Australia!

Wenger wants technology to aid offside calls

Arsenal manger Arsene Wenger is in favour of video technology in football being extended to help with offside decisions.

A meeting of the International Football Association Board in Cardiff last week confirmed live trials over the use of increased technology to help match officials will start by the 2017-18 season, something new FIFA president Gianni Infantino described as a  historic decision .

The Premier League has used a goal-line review system to adjudicate on whether goals are scored since 2013-14 and Wenger would be in favour of similar steps being taken to help banish controversial offside calls although he does not believe other areas of play should be affected.

It depends how they do it and I think next step is for the offside to be treated like …

Nottingham Forest and Steven Reid charged by FA for confronting ref Paul Tierney

Nottingham Forest and their first-team coach Steven Reid have been charged with misconduct by the Football Association over the confrontation with referee Paul Tierney after Saturday’s Premier League defeat to Liverpool.

Reid was sent off after he came on to the field to remonstrate with Tierney at the end of the match, which Forest lost 1-0 to a Darwin Nunez goal deep into stoppage time.

Forest’s referee analyst Mark Clattenburg said the club were “aggrieved” by Tierney’s incorrect decision in added time to award a dropped-ball to Liverpool in the Reds’ penalty area, rather than to Forest who were in possession in an attacking area when he stopped play for a head injury to Ibrahima Konate.

It is alleged Reid’s language towards Tierney was abusive a…

Real Madrid will be without Thibaut Courtois for a Clasico clash that Carlo Ancelotti says is not life or death .

Courtois has been sidelined with sciatica, but Ancelotti this week stated he hoped his goalkeeper would return against Barcelona at the Santiago Bernabeu on Sunday.

Los Blancos head coach Ancelotti on Saturday revealed the Belgium international will not feature in a mouthwatering battle between the top two in LaLiga.

Courtois is quite well, he feels fine. [But] he has trained very little and is not comfortable, said the Italian. He is out for tomorrow.

He will train more continuously next week. W ll see for next Wednesday or Sunday, he just needs training.

Rampant Barca lead the way in Spain

Barcelona will begin 2011 as favourites to retain the Spanish league title after ending this year with an emphatic 5-1 drubbing of city rivals Espanyol on Saturday to stay two points clear of Real Madrid going into the two-week Christmas break.

Barcelona have scored 26 goals in their last five league matches, including the extraordinary 5-0 mauling of Real at Camp Nou, winning ten successive league matches to make it 43 points from a possible 48, three points more than at this stage last season when they went on to set a record 99 points.

Espanyol had a perfect home record prior to the game and had only conceded two goals at the Cornella-El Prat, but Spanish World Cup winners Pedro Rodriguez and David Villa both grabbed braces in a one-sided Catalan derby.

Benitez awaits Higuain injury diagnosis

Napoli coach Rafael Benitez is awaiting the diagnosis of an ankle injury leading scorer Gonzalo Higuain sustained in the 0-0 draw at Inter.

The Naples club moved a point closer to securing a UEFA Champions League at San Siro on Saturday, but there were concerns when Argentina striker Higuain was carried off following a challenge with Inter defender Marco Andreoll late in the Serie A game.

After spurning a couple of opportunities to add to his 17-goal tally in the league, the former Real Madrid man contested a 50-50 challenge with Andreolli and came off worse.

The sight of the 26-year-old in considerable pain will also be a concern for Argentina coach Alejandro Sabella ahead of the upcoming FIFA World Cup.

And with Napoli s next fixture comes in the Coppa Italia f…

Allegri keen to open contract talks with Juventus

Massimiliano Allegri is loving life at Juventus and is keen to open talks over a new contract after the Champions League final against Real Madrid.

The 49-year-old s existing deal is due to expire in June 2018 and Arsenal are believed to be keeping a close eye on Allegri s situation in Turin.

Nevertheless, the Juve coach seems to prefer a prolonged stay in Turin over a potential move to the Premier League.

I want to stay at Juventus, Allegri said at a news conference ahead of Saturday s trip to Bologna for their final Serie A outing.

I have a contract until 2018 and need to talk to the club after the Champions League final.

I am proud of what we have achieved during my three years here.

Hopefully we can add another trophy in Cardiff.…

´A cowardly act´ – Feyenoord disgusted as Union Berlin chiefs suffer Rotterdam attack

Feyenoord have condemned a totally reprehensible attack on top officials from Europa Conference League rivals Union Berlin at a Rotterdam restaurant.

According to reports in the Netherlands, Union president Dirk Zingler and director Oskar Kosche were among those sitting outside when a group of men began hurling missiles, including glasses and chairs.

Feyenoord said minor injuries were sustained by those under assault, declaring those responsible had no right to consider themselves supporters of the Eredivisie club.

In a statement, Feyenoord confirmed the attack on Wednesday evening occurred in the city centre.

It was a totally reprehensible event that should not happen to anyone who is a guest in the city for what should be a beautiful European football …
